I've read two Mary Elizabeth Braddons - Lady Audley's Secret, which I LOVED, and The Doctor's Wife - can't quite remember if I hated it or merely disliked it :) I do like a bit of melodrama in novels though, so I'll see if I can get this one.ohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01245931629228090133noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8027299943447728658.post-39438824195645072982017-05-24T14:19:31.430-04:002017-05-24T14:19:31.430-04:00Sounds like great fun! I wonder whether Louisa May Alcott read Mary Elizabeth Braddon and was inspired to write in the same vein.JaneGShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11094501834387622997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8027299943447728658.post-50932879224837025042017-05-22T12:29:17.334-04:002017-05-22T12:29:17.334-04:00I've only read Lady Audley's Secret, which...I've only read Lady Audley's Secret, which I liked but didn't love. I think I had a lot more sympathy for Lady Audley than the book did.

That is interesting that the Trail of the Serpent predates The Moonstone. Maybe Wilkie Collins gets more credit since his book was more of a classic "who done it"?Ruthiellahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03871834571645928819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8027299943447728658.post-65427780577408233872017-05-21T16:55:13.737-04:002017-05-21T16:55:13.737-04:00Mary Elizabeth Braddon is great, isn't she? Maybe I should try this one next. I don't remember either of them being what you'd call detective fiction or traditional mysteries, though they do feature characters with big secrets that are ultimately revealed. I think Oliver Twist could also be considered Victorian sensation, though people mostly remember it for the plight of the poor orphans. I've never read any sensationalist Victorian fiction, but I'm definitely curious to see why these books were so popular, and this sounds like a great read! I had no idea that Three Times Dead was published before The Moonstone. It's interesting to see how the detective genre got started in the nineteenth century!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
