And I loved that he includes very minor characters as narrators, such as attorneys and housekeepers. But not the love interest Laura -- maybe she's better seen and not heard from? Hmmm. I agree, Marian was the real catch in the family.Karen K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13483190930383406559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8027299943447728658.post-70460716289554274652009-11-08T16:10:02.443-05:002009-11-08T16:10:02.443-05:00I read this recently too and agree with much of wh...I read this recently too and agree with much of what you said - especially how readable it was and how well the multiple narrators worked! And of course, he's in love with Miss Fairlie, not miss Homelie!

Eva (and Amanda) -- I think you're right, Collins was more forward-thinking than other writers of his era. The gender stereotyping didn't bother me in this book but I was listening to it over the course of a month (which was very hard!) so maybe it was the distance that separated me from it.

I didn't pick up on Hartright's punny name. That's so funny now that I think about it!

I don't normally mind spoilers: I feel if a book is truly great, reading what happens int he end before the end comes doesn't ruin it. This book didn't really seem spoiler worthy: I kind of figured what would happen in the end, but I didn't know how it would get there.

The Moonstone was more surprising in the end. I did NOT like it nearly as much!Rebecca Reidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06062252252301802298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8027299943447728658.post-13906775374106086562009-11-02T09:58:41.893-05:002009-11-02T09:58:41.893-05:00I suppose you're right about Victorian women i...I suppose you're right about Victorian women in fiction. . . maybe I've just read too much Dickens lately -- in David Copperfield the protagonist marries this idiot girl when clearly he should have married a smarter one! It was so frustrating, but apparently Dickens had issues.

I am looking forward to reading all about Collins in the Classics Circuit though. It starts today!Karen K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13483190930383406559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8027299943447728658.post-35861057765354403142009-11-01T22:21:42.887-05:002009-11-01T22:21:42.887-05:00Well at least you get to try out another of his bo...Well at least you get to try out another of his books for the tour, right? Marian's character didn't bother me, partly because at the time they probably thought women COULDDN'T be both beautiful and smart, and he was willing to make her smart rather than mean based on her looks (as many authors at the time did), and partly because I felt like he was complimenting women by writing such a strong character. Maybe that's naive of me? Anyway, I loved her.

Okay, I think after 8000 NaNo words today, my brain is a bit fried. Look at that runon sentence up there!
