The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. The Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde are clever, but the literary characters are only small parts of the books. I think it's much harder for authors to create their own unique characters.Karen K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13483190930383406559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8027299943447728658.post-83508659080262493762010-03-16T16:15:59.824-04:002010-03-16T16:15:59.824-04:00lol, that actually is a great way to start a revie...lol, that actually is a great way to start a review if you ask me :P

I definitely see your point about fictionalised biographies/stories about real people, but every now and then one that works comes along. It sounds like that was the case here.Ana S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/16092495983972185943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8027299943447728658.post-81422191351403966112010-03-13T15:26:27.252-05:002010-03-13T15:26:27.252-05:00Amanda -- the JA book group generally liked it, th...Amanda -- the JA book group generally liked it, though the professional reviews are mixed. We're thinking about reading an actual biography of JA next year.

Teresa -- this is the best of the JA fanfic I've read, which isn't much. I am tempted by P&P&Zombies though... my book group is planning on reading it this summer. I did read one of the Jane Austen mysteries and didn't care for it much.Karen K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13483190930383406559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8027299943447728658.post-28356297462231897442010-03-13T09:56:07.580-05:002010-03-13T09:56:07.580-05:00I'm with you on the Austen fanfic. The funny thing is, I might pick up some of those books if they were about original characters, even original characters obviously inspired by Auten's characters.

And I generally feel the same way about fictionalized stories of real people. I do enjoy some fictionalized biographies like this (which I haven't read). I just like them not to contradict known facts or to create versions of the people that have nothing to do with what we know of them. So something like Wolf Hall, which reinvents Cromwell while sticking to the basic facts, would work for me while a series making Jane Austen into a detective leaves me scratching my head.Teresahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09896331683344872038noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8027299943447728658.post-39630199465978443762010-03-13T09:32:42.366-05:002010-03-13T09:32:42.366-05:00I guess I'm kind of glad I didn't read it ...I guess I'm kind of glad I didn't read it then, if there were spoilers!
