Challenge Link-Up Post: Classic By a Non-White Author
Please link your reviews for your Classic By a Non-White Author here. This is only for the Classic By a Non-White Author category. These should all be classics that were written by an author who is not white; i.e., African-American, Asian, Latino, etc. The can be in translation or written in English.
If you do not have a blog, or somewhere public on the internet where you post book reviews, please write your mini-review/thoughts in the comments section. If you like, you can include the name of your blog and/or the title of the book in your link, like this: "Karen K. @ Books and Chocolate (Their Eyes Were Watching God)."
Read Passing by Nella Larsen, an very good short novel from the Harlem Renaissance about the relationship of two African-American women, one of whom lives as white, keeping her race a secret from her husband.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading Paule Marshall's "Brown Girl, Brownstones" I checked more than once to be sure it was actually published in 1959, because it seems so timely. This novel is extremely well written and deeply moving. As an immigrant from England I have always felt I was given a `pass' by communities I moved into because I was white and, in the South, `not a Yankee.' However I was prompted to think about the cultural disruption I experienced prompted by reading this book.
ReplyDeleteOnce again thank you Karen for the motivation to expand my reading.
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

Hi Karen, just added 'Train to Pakistan'by Khushwant Singh.
ReplyDeleteI just added a link to Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun.
ReplyDeleteI read Blues People. It was about the history of American Music, and it was really good...a bit dense (especially the last chapter). But great overview!
ReplyDeletePosted my link for Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Enjoyed this classic!
