Read Passing by Nella Larsen, an very good short novel from the Harlem Renaissance about the relationship of two African-American women, one of whom lives as white, keeping her race a secret from her husband.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading Paule Marshall's "Brown Girl, Brownstones" I checked more than once to be sure it was actually published in 1959, because it seems so timely. This novel is extremely well written and deeply moving. As an immigrant from England I have always felt I was given a `pass' by communities I moved into because I was white and, in the South, `not a Yankee.' However I was prompted to think about the cultural disruption I experienced prompted by reading this book.
