Classics Spin #12

Another Classics Club Spin! If you're not familiar, participants post a list of 20 books on their Classics Club list. On Monday morning, a random number will be posted, and I'll read the corresponding title from my list and put up my post on May 2. I've had great like with the random spin picks, so it's always fun to have someone else choose the next read from my list.

I only have nine books left, so I'm going to have to repeat the list to get to an even 20.  In no particular order, here's my list:

1. Lark Rise to Candleford by Flora Thompson
2. The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens
3. The Four Feathers by A. E. W. Mason
4. Main Street by Sinclair Lewis
5. New Grub Street by George Gissing
6. Portrait of a Lady by Henry James
7. The Man in the Iron Mask by Alexandre Dumas
8. The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo
9. A Dance to the Music of Time (First Movement) by Anthony Powell

Now the repeats:

10. Portrait of a Lady
11. New Grub Street
12. The Mystery of Edwin Drood
13. The Man in the Iron Mask
14. The Four Feathers
15. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
16. The Mystery of Edwin Drood
17. A Dance to the Music of Time (First Movement)
18. Lark Rise to Candleford
19. New Grub Street
20. The Man in the Iron Mask

Right now I'm kind of hoping for The Man in the Iron Mask, Portrait of a Lady, or A Dance to the Music of Time.  I'm kind of dreading Hunchback -- I tried listening to the audio version and it's moving incredibly slow.

Bloggers, have you read any of these books? Which should I hope for?

Updated: The Spin has given me #8 -- The Hunchback of Notre Dame! I'll just have to buckle down and give it another try.

  2. Wow, just 9 titles! Impressive work. I hope you get Lark Rise to Candleford, which I loved when I read it 20 years ago, and should definitely read again. (Still haven't seen the show. Oops.)

    1. I've tried reading bits of it, but it seems to start out slowly. I've just checked the DVD series from the library, thinking that might inspire me.

  3. I'm a huge Henry James fan, so I love Portrait of a Lady, but I didn't mind Hunchback of Notre Dame...I think I got lucky with a really good translation, or maybe I was just in the mood for it. Good luck with the spin. I hope you get a book you want to read. :)

    1. Thanks! I'm pretty intimidated by James, I've only read Daisy Miller, which was OK, and The Turn of the Screw, which I could hardly get through. I've heard Portrait is really good.

  4. I've only read The Mystery of Edwin Drood and New Grub Street. The latter I enjoyed, but it's certainly not uplifting. As you know, I have The Hunchback too. Lark Rise to Candleford would probably be my pick .... it sounds like a great read. Good luck with your spin!

    1. I've read The Odd Women by Gissing and it was pretty good. I think I might like NGS because it's about a journalist and that was my major in college. I can also use it for the Back to the Classics Challenge!

  5. Of these I have only read Lark Rise to Candleford, which is a lovely book. I hope if you get one you're dreading it turns out not to be so bad!

    1. Lark Rise makes me think it might be a bit like Cranford, which I loved. It's long so I hope I enjoy it!

  6. Great selections! The Hunchback left me also kind of, wearied, I guess is the word! Man in the Iron Mask is good romping read like all Dumas works! Hope you enjoy your pick!

    1. Thanks! I downloaded the audio of Hunchback a couple of weeks ago and it seemed to take forever to get going. I've read The Three Musketeers but not Twenty Years After, so I hope Man in the Iron Mask is one of those books you can read out of sequence and still enjoy.

    2. Hugo ..it is! All the best! Let me know how you find it. I will then decide if I should revisit the attempt or not!

  8. I've only read Lark Rise which I'm sure is really lightweight compared with the others. I hope you get something you enjoy reading - whatever it is.

  9. Enjoy the book! I've been meaning to read it for ages, so I look forward to your review.

  10. Hunchback may be one of the year-long reading projects. Doesn't sound like something I could read in just one go.

    Good luck!
