Classics Spin #27

Third time's the charm? I've failed spectacularly on my last two attempts to participate in the Classics Spin. I'm down to the last 15 books on my Classics Club list, so I've picked ten books I really want to finish this year, listing all of them twice. Hopefully next week the random spin will inspire me to actually read -- and blog about -- one of the books on the list.

UPDATE: The Classics Spin has spoken, and I'll be reading #6, A Few Green Leaves by Barbara Pym. I'm very pleased and look forward to reading it August.

  1. The Caravaners by Elizabeth von Arnim
  2. The Caravaners
  3. Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
  4. Crime and Punishment
  5. A Few Green Leaves by Barbara Pym
  6. A Few Green Leaves
  7. Invitation to the Waltz by Rosamond Lehmann
  8. Invitation to the Waltz
  9. Mandoa, Mandoa! by Winifred Holtby
  10. Mandoa, Mandoa!
  11. My American by Stella Gibbons
  12. My American
  13. A Pin to See the Peepshow by F. Tennyson Jesse
  14. A Pin to See the Peepshow
  15. Ralph the Heir by Anthony Trollope
  16. Ralph the Heir
  17. Westwood by Stella Gibbons
  18. Westwood
  19. The World My Wilderness by Rose Macauley
  20. The World My Wilderness

Bloggers, are you participating in the next Spin? What's on your list?

  1. I've only read one of these, C&P which I enjoyed. I hope you enjoy whatever you get.

    1. I've been putting off Crime and Punishment for so long! Maybe it's finally time for me to just commit to reading it.

  2. Good luck with you spin Karen!
I'm doing a similar thing with my Austen's this time around.

  3. We're even -- I've only heard of two of yours too. C&P is very good, and I recommend the Oliver Ready translation!

    1. Thanks, I was wondering which translation to choose! Peavear is really famous and I've also heard good things about the new Katz translation. I hadn't heard of the Oliver Ready so I'll look for it!

  4. I've read 1, 5, 11, 17, and 19, all quite good and I think you'll find easy to read. I did try Invitation to the Waltz, but couldn't get into it, although I know it is a favourite with many.

    1. I've only read one book by Lehmann and it was OK, not my favorite. I think that's why I've waited so long to read Invitation to the Waltz! I love Stella Gibbons so I'd be happy to read one of hers. Would also love to read the Barbara Pym, it's the only one of hers I haven't read yet.

  5. I tried to get into Westwood at the beginning of this year and couldn't, a disappointment as I've really enjoyed all the Gibbons I've read so far. I'd love you to get it and then have your thoughts on it. Good luck!

    1. I tried Westwood a couple of years ago and couldn't get into it but maybe it starts out slow -- sometimes it's just the wrong time for a book. I have several of her other books on the TBR shelf so I hope I haven't read all the best ones already!

  6. Crime & Punishment is pretty great, but maybe not the one to make a successful spin, especially in a short time slot? ;-) I've read other books by a bunch of your authors but not the ones you picked. I'd be especially curious about the Macaulay or the Lehmann. Happy spinning!

    1. Yes, I'm a little worried about that one, I've been putting it off forever! I just read another Macauley called Crewe Train so I would love to read another of her books.

  7. I'm currently reading another Macauley title "Dangerous Ages" that was recommended by Thomas at Hogglestock a few years ago. So far I am really enjoying it. I hope, however, you get the Barbara Pym. I read it earlier this year and liked it. I've become a bit of a Pym fanatic. :D

    1. I did get Barbara Pym and I'm very pleased! And Dangerous Ages is on my future TBR list also.

  8. I never participate in the challenges as I couldn't take the pressure but admire those who do! Good choice though!

  9. The only one I've read is Crime and Punishment which was on my own classics club list - absolutely loved it.
I was surprised to see Holtby's name here - I thought she'd written only novel (South Riding)
