The commenters have spoken!! I have taken the plunge and signed up for Adam's Whale of a Read-Along event at Roof Beam Reader. Our goal: to finish Herman Melville's most famous work, Moby-Dick. If you're interested in reading more about it, or signing up, here's a link to Adam's post.
I'm pretty scared, but Adam has created a schedule that sounds pretty manageable, only 15 pages per day, about 20 chapters total per week. How bad could that be? And I have not one but TWO audiobook versions checked out from the library. I'll listen to a little of each and decide which one I prefer.
Anyone else interested? Or has everyone else finished Moby-Dick already? Did you love it or hate it? I'll post updates as the readalong progresses. Wish me luck!!
Glad you went with Moby Dick in the end - enjoy!
ReplyDeleteYes, I think having like-minded readers really inspired me.
DeleteYahoo! I'm very glad that you're with us. :)
ReplyDeleteI've actually read it once before, as you probably know, and I'm reading it again because the first time, well, I didn't give it the time or respect it deserves (I couldn't - first semester of grad school; the professor gave us ONE WEEK to read it. Ridiculous).
So, yes, I "loved" it, but I didn't "enjoy" it, because I couldn't. I truly respect the work, though, and I'm so excited to revisit. I'm already quite sunk into it.
ONE WEEK? That's ridiculous, even for grad school!!
DeleteI will be curious to know if any of the audio versions include the prefatory "Etymology" section. I note it is not on Adam's schedule.
ReplyDeleteThe first line of Moby-Dick is definitely not "Call me Ishmael."
I noticed that -- I was looking at it online the other day via Project Gutenberg. I'll make a point of checking for it in the audio versions.
DeleteBEST BEST BEST to you on this! I audiobooked it and loved the enthusiasm in the narrator's voice. I admit that I allowed myself to drift off when my imagination was not captured - yes, I zoned out at times - but I LOVED the good parts! So I hope you find much to love.
