New job!!!

Sorry for taking so long to post, but I've had a busy week.  Today was my very first day . . . .

AT MY NEW JOB !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it's official, I am gainfully employed in a library for the first time in almost exactly three years.  I had the bad timing to complete my library degree at the height of a recession, after moving to a city with a hiring freeze.  :-(

Not my library.  But isn't it beautiful?

But finally, after almost three years of volunteering, I've been hired at the library -- though sadly, not as a librarian.  But I'm on the city payroll, which is the important thing, and I can keep applying for promotions.  I have my foot in the door and I'll just keep trying.

I started at my new branch today and everyone seems lovely, I'm sure I'll be very happy there.

I can't tell you how nice it is to be a Real Library Employee!!!!!!!!

  7. Congratulations! Getting your foot in the door is the first step. I have known many librarians who also started out in non-librarian roles after getting their degree, and I hope the move will happen as quickly and smoothly for you as it did for them!

  9. That is terrific! Have you practiced your "SHHH!" for when people speak too loudly?

  18. Thanks to everyone for your congratulations and encouragement!! I really appreciate it! I know this is the first step to bigger and better things. I've worked two days this week so far and I know I'm going to love my new job.

Hopefully my new job won't keep me from my reading and book-blogging. :-)

Thomas -- I mostly practice my shushing technique on my kids. Of course they also shush me when they're reading and I'm trying to talk to them. :-)

Verity -- I'll be a Library Aide, which is essentially shelving, weeding, sorting, etc. However, they've already posted jobs with more responsibilities, and I've already applied for those too. Competition was fierce the last time around, they had more than 500 applicants in the last pool. There are definitely librarians doing non-librarian jobs, and people who were demoted due to job cuts. Plus one of the biggest school districts in the city just downsized and cut every single school's library assistant, so there's a ton of competition.

I have my foot in the door, and that's what counts. I'd still be happy shelving -- I just belong in the library!

Jane GS -- isn't that a great photo? It's the University Library in Graz, Austria. Not my library!

  22. I've always wanted to work in a library. The one in the photo is amazing! Is it in England? My son worked in a library for a little while. We were amazed at the politics of the place and the pettiness. Who would have thought?
